How Background Removal Works

Our background remover uses intelligent edge sampling and multi-pass flood-fill segmentation — the same fundamental algorithms used in professional tools like GIMP — to identify and remove backgrounds from your images. Here's how it works:

  1. Edge Color Sampling: The tool samples colors from all four edges of your image to determine the most likely background color with high accuracy.
  2. Multi-Pass Flood Fill: Starting from all edges, a flood-fill algorithm identifies connected pixels within the specified tolerance. A second pass catches similar colors missed in the first round.
  3. Alpha Mask: Identified background pixels are set to transparent (alpha = 0), while foreground pixels remain fully opaque.
  4. Edge Feathering: A smooth transition is applied along the mask boundary to prevent harsh edges and create a natural-looking result.
  5. Brush Refinement: Use the Remove More brush to paint additional areas transparent, or the Restore Parts brush to bring back accidentally removed foreground.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use images with clear subjects against relatively uniform backgrounds
  • If some background remains, increase the Sensitivity slider and click Re-Apply
  • Use Remove More brush to paint over any remaining background areas
  • Use Restore Parts brush to bring back parts of the subject that were accidentally removed
  • Enable Smooth edges for cleaner results on complex boundaries like hair
